Architecture is not seasonal
Look for beautiful buildings, city scapes, and urban locations during the winter. Cool buildings, walls, and parking structures don’t die during the cold months, they look just about the same all year round! Perrrrrrfect for winter shooting!
2) Pine Trees are evergreen
If you or your clients are still dying for a more natural landscape, look for a place with pine trees. Even when they are dusted in snow, they are alive and well during the winter and make for beautiful scenery in winter shoots. You can of course head up a canyon to find these beauties, but also look in local parks. Sometimes (especially when every thing is covered in snow) you can save yourself a trip up the canyon and get basically the same look at a much more convenient location.
3) shoot in a studio
Winter is a great time to book a studio, and shoot in a nice, temperature controlled space. Studios don’t look different in the dead of winter, than they do in the heat of summer, and they save you and your clients from freezing to death in the name of photos! There are many studios to choose from, and most are “natural light” which means you won’t have to worry about bringing lighting in—they were designed with natural light shoots in mind! Plus, unlike some other indoor options, they are private and give you and your client the most comfortable environment possible for shooting.
4) think outside the box… to shoot inside.
Get creative and look for other public places that could be perfect for photos! Coffee shops with good light, public buildings like capitol buildings, visitor centers, lobbies of public buildings that have good window light, green houses, museums, etc. Could all be great options for shooting indoors during the winter (Many public places are free to be inside, but some you’ll have to pay an entrance and/or photo fee).
5) SHOOT IN your client’s home
In-home sessions have gotten so much more popular lately and I love it! They are so cozy and personal, and perfect for winter time! Ask you client if they have room’s with adequate light, and places in their home (bedroom, kitchen, living room etc). that could work for a great shoot location!
basically, just think of places that don’t depend on warm weather to be beautiful, and remember that there are plenty of indoor options if you or your clients don’t want to brave the low temps for your shoot!
Good luck out there!!
